Piñata tradition

Originally Piñata was made out of clay and it was a star with seven points. Today Piñata can be anything, like an animal or a flower. In Mexico Piñata is played especially at Christmas, in birthday parties and on 5th May ("Cinco de Mayo") for the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. From Latin America the Piñata tradition has spread to North America to children's birthday parties, and nowadays also in European parties, especially in England.

According to the Piñata tradition, we walk in our lives blindfolded, trying to find good things and making a lot of work in front of it.

According to the religious tradition, the seven points of the Piñata star symbolize the seven deadly sins, which can be won by hitting the Piñata broken and then getting fruits and other gifts. The second version tells that the Piñata is a monster, who has stolen all the good things. That for we have to hit it so hard, that it gives all back.

Instructions for the Piñata game

Prepare the Piñata game very well before the party begins. Fill the Piñata with small candies, nuts, confetti and small toys. For adults, the Piñata contents could be goodies, delicacies and things related with the party theme, like raffle tickets, fun tasks, puzzles etc. which the guests can do. Use your imagination and fill Piñata in the style of the celebration theme.

Use a strong rope for hanging the Piñata. If there's no place, ready for hanging, two adults can hold between them a long rope, on which the Piñata hangs.

Ask the participants to settle in the queue and bound at least the older children's eyes with a scarf. If children are involved in the play, make sure that the other kids don't stand too close when they are waiting for their turn to hit the Piñata with a stick. If the children are small (less than 6 years of age), you can make cuts on the Piñata before the play begins, so that the Piñata goes broken easier.

If you swing the Piñata on a string up and down and spin the blindfolded participants around until they are a bit disoriented, the play is more jollier.

All will hit in turn, and finally the Piñata breaks and candies and small items will fall to the ground. The spirit of the game is that all go at the same time to pick up the "catch". If there are small children in the play, make sure that everyone gets something from candies and toys. You can give each child a bag with kid's name on it, for maintaining the "catch". You can also tell the participants in advance, how many candies and items each may take, so that fairness is ensured, and everyone has fun.
